Forensic chemistry is the application of chemistry to law enforcement or the failure of products or processes. Many different analytical methods may be used to reveal what chemical changes occurred during an incident. Forensic chemists analyze nonbiological trace evidence found at crime scenes in order to identify unknown materials and match samples to known substances. The forensic science field has experienced a surge of interested candidates in recent years. Much of the interest can be attributed to fictional and reality television shows focused on law enforcement and forensics. These shows have provided the public a glimpse of what forensic science actually does, the responsibilities of forensic scientist’s and the impact these individuals have on solving crimes.
